I was in grade 11. Marketing, of all classes. The teacher was one of those off the cuff types: adlibbing his way through another class, leapfrogging from one topic to another that did not necessarily have anything to do with business, advertising or selling things.
One day, he sat at the front of the class on one of the student desks, a leg up. Wistfully, he said, “If you want to change your life, you can do one of three things: Get married. Have a child. Make a pot roast.”
I think I knew which of the three he was advocating; he had grown children and was going through a divorce.
Years later, I’ve done two of the three. Perhaps this Thanksgiving, I’ll try my hand at a pot roast.
